I'm not sure if this will end up being a temporary fix or not but hey it's a start. My trouble stemmed from a corrupted file from Vista SP1 according to tech support from HP. I had to replace over Windows XP, leaving user files intact. I can't run the PCRestore.exe through the Recovery Partiton (D:) either. I've still got d.drive with all the recovey stuff in like factory image ect ect but i can't press f11 any more get get to reinstall it that way any idea And my laptop came pre-installed with IE 7. What is it and how do I get rid of it? I am not convinced I presume that the connection of the LCD to the mother board is the culprit it went loose that is how they quickly fixed it. Only thing that worked was pressing SHIFT KEY 5 TIMES. I followed the F8 ‘last good config' instruction and it booted fine.
But when i insert the windows vista repair cd, the screen stays black en laptop does nothing. I have a free AVG on my PC that's always been updated. if you cant spell to start with you dont want to go messing around in your registry of all places.
