I ran the windows memory diagnostic as well as memtest86 for one pass, neither detected any errors. Or you could check the slotted vents on the case to make sure they're not clogged up. I saw that you ran Memtest and while that is great it doesn't necessarily rules out memory as being suspect. The main reason CIV5 is known to crash is because of it eats up RAM as the game progresses. Memtest86+ This will help to rule out a software problem.
I would run memtest86 and run 4 full tests, each test has 8 passes so this can take 3-4 hours but you need to be sure because new or old ram But I get paid to work on old systems, I work on current for fun mostly. Will run the 3rd stick next, but if that also produces similar errors, and all for the hammer test, should I start assuming a motherboard problem? Is there any way to troubleshoot the PSU besides trying another one or using a PSU tester?
I regularly do exactly what we are telling op to. So try the following: take out all but one stick of memory and see if you get a lockup. Resolution I have never did figure out the particular problems, but based on the suggestions here and elsewhere, I'm presuming it was a motherboard issue. You don't have access to a different one to test with do you?
