I have no more ideas for anyone on what to do where Windows 10 is involved, other than rolling back to your previous Windows. - Windows 10 is junk.

Here's an update: after posting my question and thinking more about your post on dead USB ports, I visited Fresco Logic's site to find the manufacturer's driver for the USB 3.0 Then plugged it back in, and voila, it's all good now.
