Raid For Gaming
The first thing we’d recommend is backing up all of your data. Posted on 2007-02-06 18:19:50 Jon Bach Thanks for the commments! You know the probability theory better than I do, however. Posted on 2007-02-12 11:02:26 raohara I am not sure the simple addition of failure rates is the right approach to this problem. You're right that looking at MTBF is another way of approaching it, but it is just another way of saying the same thing. If you have a RAID controller on your $150 motherboard, what does that say about the quality? You can do raid 0 with 2 disks to theoretically increase your speed by 100%! http://www.gameplayinside.com/optimize/gaming-storage-shootout-2015-ssd-hdd-or-raid-0-which-is-best/
Raid 0 Gaming Performance

Posted on 2007-02-13 10:10:27 PCC- Builder Dan From a purely technical perspective, as the numbers of drives both sold and failed are finite, yes, having one drive fail does reduce the The single platter & double platter drives are the better ones to use, for higher rates. The Raid 0 array is a clear winner in this scenario, did you expect that?

- You generally get slightly worse on reads because of the overhead of the calculations for the third drive.
- If one hard drive has a problem even for a moment, you have a degraded array on your hands.
The benefit of this over RAID 1 is that you only lose the space of 1 drive, rather than half the total space. Choosing which RAID mode is best for you will depend on whether your priority is to improve speed, reliability or both, as well as how large your budget is. JBOD is used to simply increase the capacity of a volume; when one drive in a JBOD array is filled, data spills over to the next drive, and so on.Prepping for Hdd Raid 0 Gaming And yes, when you go SSD you cannot go back :P.
Lately we have seen games increasing their size up to 65GB. AshcanPete said: Raid 0 speed = (speed of one drive) x (number of drives in array) [usually not quite this fast]Raid 5 speed = a bit less than raid 0 on This type of array is perfect for someone looking to secure their data against HDD failure, however it will produce no performance gains. If you're stuttering in games, it sounds like something other than an HDD problem.
It just kills the imersion of the game. Raid 1 For Gaming If one drive has a 1.72% chance of failure, then if you have two drives, your chance of failure on one of the drives doubles. Now I have realized that it has been caused by a Degraded RAID Array. Regards, Rich Posted on 2007-02-13 09:10:39 Jon Bach At that point in the article, I was talking about failure of the array from the standpoint of hassle, not data loss.

Keep in mind that Battlefield 3 uses large packages of game data that can be read sequentially. http://hcsprogramming.com/raid-0/raid-drives-for-gaming.php Then the question is hw vs sw RAID?
To put this in terms of the numbers you cited it would be (1.0 - 0.0172)(1.0 - 0.0172) = 0.96589584, or a 3.41% chance one of them will fail. Raid 0 Hdd Vs Single Ssd I will not EVER use HDD again. RAID 0 speeds for 3 or more drives. This is close, but not completely true.
They have provided an excellent set of tools and disks with the computer that would've been extremely helpful had I had them with me. :) But just a little more info
Two 1TB drives paired together in a striped RAID 0 configuration, for example, will be recognized as a single, 2TB volume. Portal 2 uses tiny files scattered that across the hard disk drive. Now raid 0 array adds a little latency to "random" read performance. So does RAID 1 mirror the data that goes into RAID 0? Ssd And Hdd Raid 0 This would be games only, maybe movies if I got into dling them, but nothing important. #11 fourdegrees11, Dec 19, 2015 Termie Diamond Member Joined: Aug 17, 2005 Messages: 7,856
Some researchers at Google published a similar conclusion a year ago last fall, IIRC. but what about RAID 5 or 6?
