Our approach to apprasing heatsinks is summarized below. As you've noticed cooling fans, etc., are varied and in some exotic looking. As the bearings wear out it will make so much noise that, it might become impossible to work with. I cleaned of the thermal grease off the tape and CPU with some heptane.
These fans can be very noisy sometimes due to the high speed. I am thinking of the Skythe Kamakazie, is there anything better? Reducing an entire heatsink's "value" into a single number was no easy task. Also, be sure to add or check placement of system case fans are working.
