And there's the rub - if you have the wrong drivers, or the default drivers, installed, the slider under Screen Resolution may not give you any option other than 640x480. Remember the monitor itself may have different defaults depending on the brand and age. I'd also look at event logs to see if there's anything interesting. However, even though my laptop wasn't plugged into a secondary monitor, windows display settings still detected a secondary display, referring to my laptop display twice as display 1 and display 2, I have found there are activities you do that changes your display settings. I have done clean installs of the latest drivers in case they did not install properly. Try the different slots. I thought that it solved my problem because when I went to change the color display, I had all my options restored like im used to(ie, more color options than 640x480). After your have calibrated your screen check the box " use my parameters for this device" , so it will retain your choice.
