Finally, I went onto the RealTek site (RealTek makes the Ethernet chips for practically every motherboard out there these days) and downloaded their latest driver, which is newer than what was I tried so many connections with different modems, they all connects but internet doesn't work on my laptop with windows 7. The laptop itself does not have an onboard lan port, but ethernet adapters work fine.
I had run thru all the prescribed fixes with no joy. For example, if you are not able to connect using Internet Explorer, but Firefox or Chrome work, then that would be an OS related issue.
