I have now re-wiped and re-installed... 98SE, directx, nforce driver, sound card, NIC and finally USB2 device. You need to uninstall all your USB devices and hubs before installing the drivers. If you do not have any yellow exclamation marks on a device, you do not need to update the driver. Could this be because I changed the Floppy Drive A settings on the BIOS or could it be something else? But I have wiped and reinstalled a few times, and still get the problems.

That is a Good Thing. Two somewhat newer P4 chipsets that I experimented with later had no W98 driver support at all but could boot to desktop. Otherwise it will crash. (There are workarounds, that allow Win 9x run on modern physical systems, but I won't go into detail here)In some cases enabling or disabling AMD-V/VT-x can help And I got the Abit drivers and all devices got recognised.

The nforce2 driver said something or other would not work properly without directx, but it sounded like it was just a control panel so I assumed it could be ignored. Also my Floppy is good because it works on XP like that and also it does the same thing to my orange Floppy which does indeed have the plastic on top. by R.
