Just for future reference, this problem appeared after using drivecopy to recover a failing HD. Tried starting in Safe Mode and it works fine. I set the PnP OS to YES in the BIOS and it worked.thanks dude... When it cooled and I tried to reboot, I got thin vertical stripes down the otherwise normal display.
Windows 98 Startup Problems
Please help! It then gives an error alert box saying there is an error with display adapter settings. etc. I re-read your question and saw you said that it "will not freeze if I let it sit at the windows log on screen." This points to a program wanting to
- Rebooted Normal, system.ini couldn't find msmouse.vxd and I continue with the start up.

- I am tempted to modify the system.ini to read at the mouse line:mouse=*vmouseinstead of its current:mouse=*vmouse, msmouse.vsdShould I do that to bypass the msmouse.vsd loading in future?

- Select as you wish from theColors dropdown menu & the Size slider.
- Checked the PS/2 serial port mouse functions; everything normal.
The Enum entry contains all of the hardware driver info and drivers are loaded from there. Corrupt fonts can make this OS fail.Move them out to another directory (or get good ones) after listing the corrupt font filenames for a doublecheck here to see if they are also FYI... Go to Start, Run, and type MSCONFIG.
But I have spent too much time on this already. Deleted them and try reboot after that. Windows 98 Won't Boot
I tried booting before replacing the parts, so I could get the files copied but it would have none of it. As it reboots it gives a warning that Windows did not finish booting all the way on the last attempt and gives the option to boot normaly, logged, in safe mode, see here I choose normal boot mode and Windows boots up with> the display settings at 16 colors, 640x480 resolution. Tried to reboot, but then it hung saying windows looking to load msmouse.vxd but could not install it.I went into system.ini and removed msmouse.vxd from the mouse driver line, which left About 80% of the time it restarts it again locks up and the I have todo> the whole process over again.
